Ask any experienced Pakistan traveller when to visit Hunza, and almost all will say the same thing: October.
## Why October is Special
**The Foliage**
Hunza's economy was built on apricots β and every village, every terrace, every slope is covered with apricot trees. In October, those trees turn from green to a progression of gold, amber, orange and deep crimson that rivals anything in Japan or New England. Combined with the backdrop of Rakaposhi (7,788m), Ultar Sar (7,388m), and the Karakoram peaks above, the result is a landscape of almost painful beauty.
**The Light**
After the monsoon moisture clears in September, October delivers the clearest skies of the year. The atmosphere is dry and stable, the air is clean, and the mountain views are sharper than at any other time. For photographers, the combination of autumn colour and crystal mountain light makes October the most productive month of the year.
**The Crowds (or lack thereof)**
July and August bring the most tourists to Hunza β Pakistani families and international visitors alike. By October, the crowds thin dramatically. Hotels are easier to book, trails are less busy, and the experience is more intimate.
**The Temperature**
October days in Karimabad are warm and sunny (15β22Β°C) with cool nights. Perfect hiking weather β warm enough to be comfortable, cool enough to walk without overheating.
## October Week by Week
**October 1β10:** The foliage begins to turn. The first yellows appear in the highest orchards. Still warm. Crowds from September still present.
**October 11β20:** Peak colour. The valley is at its most spectacular. This is the window most professional photographers target. Book accommodation well in advance for these dates.
**October 21β31:** Colours deepening to amber and crimson. Leaves beginning to fall. Noticeably cooler. Some snow on the passes above 4,000m. The valley is quieter and equally beautiful.
## What to Do in October
**Photography:** Eagle's Nest at sunrise. Baltit Fort at golden hour. Ganesh village terraces at midday. The whole valley is a photographic gift.
**Hiking:** The trails around Karimabad are at their best β Ultar Meadow, Duikar viewpoint, Baltit Fort walk. For trekkers, Rush Lake (4,694m) is still accessible in early October.
**Culture:** The apricot harvest may still be ending in early October. Visit local farms and buy dried apricots directly β the finest in the world.
**Day trips:** Attabad Lake, Passu Cones, Gulmit, Khunjerab (if open β usually closes mid-October). All within a short drive of Karimabad.
## Practical October Tips
- **Book accommodation early** β October is increasingly in-demand. Serena Hunza books out 2β3 months ahead for October.
- **Warm clothing for evenings** β bring a down jacket. Nights drop to 5β8Β°C.
- **Khunjerab Pass closes** β typically mid-October. Visit in first two weeks if Khunjerab is on your list.
- **Flight reliability** β PIA Gilgit flights are weather-dependent year-round. Allow extra days for flexibility.
- **Combine with Skardu** β October is also beautiful in the Shigar Valley and around Skardu's desert lakes.
