Why the K2 Base Camp Trek is in a League of Its Own
There are base camp treks, and then there is the K2 Base Camp trek. Walking the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia and on to the foot of K2 β the world's second highest and arguably most dangerous mountain β is widely considered the finest trek on the planet. The sheer scale of the Karakoram is unlike anything else. You walk past Trango Towers, Cathedral Peaks, Masherbrum, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrum before arriving at the base of the Savage Mountain itself.
This is not a casual trek. It requires fitness, mental resilience, the right gear, and β crucially β the right guide company. This guide tells you everything you need to know to make it happen.
Trek Overview
- Duration: 18β22 days (Islamabad to Islamabad)
- Maximum Elevation: 5,150m (K2 Base Camp)
- Difficulty: Strenuous β prior high-altitude trekking experience required
- Best Season: June to August
- Start/End Point: Skardu (fly from Islamabad or drive via Karakoram Highway)
- Trail Start: Askole village (last settlement)
Day-by-Day Route Highlights
Days 1β3: Islamabad β Skardu β Askole. You fly from Islamabad to Skardu (one of the world's most spectacular mountain flights, with K2 visible from the plane on clear days), then drive to Askole β the last village before the wilderness. From Askole, the real journey begins.
Days 4β6: Askole β Jhola β Paiyu. Walking along the Braldo River canyon with towering granite walls above you. Camping at Paiyu, where you get your first views of the Trango Towers and Baltoro Muztagh.
Days 7β8: Paiyu β Urdukas β Goro II. You step onto the Baltoro Glacier β 62km of ice and moraine, one of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions. Camp at Urdukas, a grassy shelf above the glacier with jaw-dropping views.
Days 9β10: Concordia. The highlight of the trek. You reach Concordia (4,600m), the confluence of the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glaciers, with four 8,000m peaks visible simultaneously β K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, and Gasherbrum II. This is one of the greatest mountain panoramas on Earth.
Days 11β12: K2 Base Camp (5,150m). Walk up the Godwin-Austen Glacier to K2 Base Camp. The south face of K2 towers above you β 3,600 vertical metres of rock and ice from base to summit. The atmosphere is electric with expedition camps.
Days 13β18: Return journey via the same route, with side trips possible to Broad Peak Base Camp and Gasherbrum Base Camp.

- Liaison Officer: A government-appointed officer must accompany all foreign groups (included in our package price)
- Porter Registration: All porters must be registered and insured
Wonderland Treks & Tours handles all permit acquisition as part of our package. You do not need to deal with the bureaucracy yourself.

June through August is the only viable window for the Baltoro Glacier. July is generally considered the most stable month weather-wise.
