Region
Hunza Valley has captivated travellers for centuries — thought by many to be the inspiration for James Hilton's mythical Shangri-La. Nestled between the Karakoram, Hindu Kush, and Himalayan mountain ranges, Hunza is a land of ancient forts, terraced apricot orchards, turquoise glacial lakes, and the friendliest people in Pakistan. This comprehensive tour visits every highlight: the 900-year-old Baltit Fort, the equally ancient Altit Fort, the dramatic Attabad Lake created by a 2010 landslide, the iconic Passu Cones, and the drive to Khunjerab Pass (4,800m) — the world's highest paved international border crossing with China.
Baltit Fort — 900+ year old Hunza royal fortress with panoramic valley views
Attabad Lake — stunning turquoise lake born from the 2010 landslide
Khunjerab Pass (4,800m) — world's highest paved international border crossing
Passu Cones — Pakistan's most iconic mountain silhouette
Eagle's Nest viewpoint — five mountain ranges visible simultaneously
Ganish Village — Pakistan's oldest continuously inhabited settlement (c. 900 CE)
Hussaini Suspension Bridge — one of the world's most thrilling rope bridges
Islamabad → Gilgit → Hunza (Karimabad)
Morning flight to Gilgit (55 min) or early drive via KKH. Scenic drive through Gilgit to Karimabad (Hunza). Stop at Rakaposhi Viewpoint in Minapin for the iconic mountain reflection. Check into hotel. Welcome dinner.
Baltit Fort, Altit Fort & Old Karimabad
Morning at Baltit Fort (900+ years, UNESCO tentative list) — explore the Mir's chambers, the Sheesh Mahal mirror room, and panoramic ramparts with views of Ultar Sar glacier. Afternoon at Altit Fort — Pakistan's oldest inhabited fortress perched above the Hunza River gorge. Walk the old bazaar of Karimabad for local gems, embroidery, and dried fruit.
Eagle's Nest, Duiker & Nagar Valley
Early morning drive up to Eagle's Nest viewpoint (3,600m) — five mountain ranges visible simultaneously in perfect weather: Karakoram, Hindu Kush, Himalaya, Pamir, and Kunlun. Afternoon: Nagar Valley and Hopar (Hoper) Glacier walk.
Attabad Lake & Gulmit Village
Drive along KKH through the famous tunnels built after the 2010 landslide to the stunning Attabad Lake — a 21km turquoise lake that appeared overnight when the landslide dammed the Hunza River. Boat ride on the lake. Visit Gulmit Village — traditional Wakhi community with a small local museum.
Passu Cones, Hussaini Bridge & Borith Lake
The most photographed morning in Pakistan. Walk to the Passu Cones viewpoint at sunrise — the cathedral spires of Passu Sar are unmistakable. Cross the Hussaini Suspension Bridge — wooden planks with gaps over the raging Hunza River. Serene morning at Borith Lake (wetland bird sanctuary).
Khunjerab Pass Day Trip (4,800m)
Full-day drive to Khunjerab Pass (4,800m) — the world's highest paved border crossing between Pakistan and China. Pass through Sost (last Pakistani town) and the dramatic high-altitude corridor. Spot Marco Polo sheep grazing near the road. Stand at the Pakistan-China border marker at 4,800m.
Return Gilgit → Islamabad
Morning free in Hunza for last shopping and farewells. Drive to Gilgit airport for afternoon flight back to Islamabad. Alternatively, choose the scenic 2-day road journey back via KKH.
What is the best time to visit Hunza?
The valley has two peak seasons: Spring (March–May) when apricot and cherry blossoms bloom in the orchards — absolutely spectacular. Autumn (September–November) for golden foliage and crystal-clear mountain views after the monsoon. Summer (June–August) is the trekking season. Winter is possible but cold and some roads may close.
Are the Gilgit flights reliable?
Mountain flights in Pakistan are weather-dependent and subject to cancellation, especially in monsoon season. We recommend building in a buffer day. Alternatively, the KKH road journey (12–14hrs) is reliable year-round (except heavy snowfall closures in winter).
