The Kashmir Markhor (Capra falconeri) β Pakistan's national animal β is widely regarded as the world's most coveted mountain trophy. With its spectacular corkscrew horns, impeccable mountain habitat, and extreme rarity, a Markhor permit is more sought-after than almost any other hunting licence in the world. In 2025, a single Astore Markhor permit sold at government auction for $370,000 β a world record for any hunting licence. Importantly, 80% of all hunting revenue flows directly to local communities under Pakistan's internationally acclaimed Community Conservation Programme, which has turned Markhor from near-extinction to a thriving population. Wonderland Treks & Tours provides the full ground logistics package for Markhor hunters who have secured their government permit: experienced tracking guides, camp setup, cook, transport, and all permits for movement in restricted areas. The hunts take place in Community Managed Conservation Areas (CMCAs) in Chitral District or Gilgit-Baltistan between November and April β the optimal season for trophy Markhor.

How do I get a Markhor hunting permit?
Permits are issued by the Government of Pakistan through an annual auction, typically advertised in September with bids received in November. The Government of Gilgit-Baltistan and KPK independently manage their CMCAs. Wonderland does not sell permits β we provide the logistics support once you have a permit. We can guide you through the application process.
What is the success rate?
With our experienced trackers who know the CMCA boundaries and Markhor movement patterns, our clients achieve a very high success rate. Markhor populations have recovered dramatically under the conservation programme β our guides have 20+ years of hunting these specific areas.
Is trophy hunting conservation or exploitation?
Pakistan's Markhor hunting programme is internationally recognized as a conservation success. 80% of permit fees go directly to local communities, giving them a financial incentive to protect Markhor from poaching. Since the programme started, Markhor populations have increased from fewer than 200 to over 5,000 in key areas.
