The Golden Mahseer (Tor putitora) — locally called the "Tiger of the River" — is one of Asia's most revered sport fish. Growing to 50kg+ in the right habitat and fighting like a freight train on light tackle, it is the premier freshwater game fish of the subcontinent. The Neelum River in Azad Kashmir, fed by Himalayan glaciers and flowing through one of Pakistan's most beautiful valleys, holds excellent Mahseer populations alongside rainbow and brown trout. The Neelum Valley itself is extraordinary — lush green forests unlike anything in the northern areas, traditional Kashmiri wooden architecture, and a frontier atmosphere from the proximity to the Line of Control. Mahseer fishing requires patience and skill — these fish are wary, powerful, and demand respect. When they run, they are unstoppable.

What tackle do I need for Mahseer?
A medium-heavy spinning rod (7–10ft), strong braid (20–30lb), and a reel with a smooth drag. Lures: large spoons, spinners, and dough/atta paste for bottom fishing. Local guide provides local tackle knowledge. We recommend bringing your own rod as local rentals are limited.
What is the best season for Mahseer in Neelum?
Spring (April–May) and Autumn (September–October) are peak Mahseer seasons when water temperatures are optimal and fish are feeding actively. Summer is also good but water runs faster and higher. Winter is off-season.
