Expedition Overview

Gasherbrum I, known as Hidden Peak (K5), stands at 8,080m in the Baltoro Mustagh range of the Karakoram — the 11th highest mountain in the world. Its unusual name comes from the fact that it is hidden from view until you reach the upper Baltoro Glacier. The standard Northwest Ridge route (first climbed by Americans in 1958) is considered one of the more technically moderate routes on an 8,000m peak, involving glacier travel, crevasse navigation, and high-altitude face climbing. GI shares a base camp with the adjacent Gasherbrum II (8,034m), making it possible to attempt both peaks in a single expedition. The mountain is frequently combined with G2 by strong parties.
