The Milky Way Overhead — Asia's Darkest Skies on the World's Second Highest Plateau

6 Days
Duration
4,150m
Max Elevation

Group Size
Deosai National Park (near Sheosar Lake)
Region
Deosai National Park, at an average elevation of 4,114m with no towns, no electricity, and negligible light pollution, offers some of the finest dark sky conditions in all of Asia. On a clear night above 4,000m in Pakistan's clean mountain air, the Milky Way is not just visible — it is overwhelming. The band stretches horizon to horizon, star clusters are visible to the naked eye, and the Andromeda Galaxy appears without binoculars. This astronomy camp combines a high-quality 12-inch Dobsonian telescope with laser pointer constellation tours, astrophotography sessions with long-exposure guidance, and the unique added dimension of Deosai's extraordinary daytime ecology: Himalayan Brown Bears roaming the wildflower plateau, golden marmots at every turn, and Sheosar Lake reflecting the stars above. Pakistan is one of the world's great dark sky destinations — this camp makes the most of it.

Deosai → Skardu → Islamabad
Morning: final plateau walk. Drive to Skardu. Fly or drive to Islamabad.
What can we see through the telescope?
At Deosai's altitude and sky darkness, the 12-inch Dobsonian reveals: Saturn's rings and moons, Jupiter's cloud bands, Andromeda Galaxy (M31) in detail, Orion Nebula, globular clusters, and numerous star-forming nebulae. Our astronomer guides choose targets based on what's up each night.
Is astrophotography possible for beginners?
Yes — our guide provides a simple step-by-step astrophotography tutorial. Any camera with manual mode works (DSLR, mirrorless, or even some smartphone cameras). We provide a tracking mount for longer exposures. Many participants get their best-ever night sky photos on their first try at Deosai.
