Expedition Overview

Distaghil Sar (7,884m) is the 19th highest mountain in the world and the highest peak in the Hispar Muztagh range. Despite its altitude, it remains one of the least-climbed major summits in Pakistan — a fact that speaks to its remoteness and technical difficulty. The approach leads from Hispar village in Nagar through the remote Hispar Glacier system, far from the more-frequented Baltoro routes. The standard Southwest Ridge involves complex glacier navigation, crevasse fields, and highly technical upper mountain terrain. The mountain has received barely 20 successful ascents in its entire recorded climbing history, making it one of the Karakoram's great challenges for the most experienced high-altitude mountaineers. The Hispar Valley approach itself is a magnificent and rarely-visited wilderness experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why has Distaghil Sar been climbed so rarely?

The combination of remote approach (no porter culture as established as Baltoro), complex and crevassed glacier navigation, and highly technical upper mountain make this one of the most committing expeditions in Pakistan. Weather windows are also notoriously difficult in the Hispar region.
